Hoya sp. gunung gading was collected at Gunung Gading National Park in Sarawak, Borneo. It has some of the most beautiful and decorative leaves of any Hoya. Not only are they stunningly vibrant green, but when you expose Hoya sp. gunung gading to direct sun, the leaves will turn as red as wine. This is such a beautiful plant that it almost seems unreal. It has a tendency to go through growth spurts–slow for a while, then sudden bursts of vines followed by those spectacular zebran leaves.
Then, one day it blooms, and you’re shocked by the little fuchsia faces gleaming up at you with the same look of surprise that you’re giving them!
Care level: easy
Ideal temperature: 68-85°F / 20-27°C.
Humidity: 45% and above.
Light: Bright, mainly indirect light.
Sun Exposure: In the northern hemisphere, south, east, or west-facing rooms. North-facing windows may not provide enough light for bloom initiation.
Soil: Potting mix with quick drainage that can provide good air circulation. Hoya sp. gunung gading can withstand a little dryness between waterings but don’t let it go too long as the leaves are fairly thin. Potting mixes that retain too much moisture for too long will rot the roots. Typical Hoya mixes contain perlite, orchid bark, cactus and succulent potting mix, coco coir, or sand among other ingredients but dense substrates like peat are used in moderation to prevent too much moisture retention. Unless of course you go semi-hydro. I’m not here to tell you what to do. I grow these babies in PON.
